View Full Version : Always Online?

Well, there has been a rumor concerning the next Xbox and it's Always Online requirement. I, for one, think it's a dipshit move by a once great company. If Microsoft actually follows through with this, they will lose millions of loyal customers. BUT its only a rumor right? Maybe not, as Microsoft's creative director Adam Orth defended the rumor and it's always online requirement. Let's just say that Adam Orth is a complete dick to xbox fans.

NeoGaf and it's users compiled a screenshot of all of the tweets made my Alex Orth regarding the incident, and Orth has made his account private. Microsoft should be firing this asshat soon.

A youtuber, Francis, talks about the Next Xbox and it's requirement and then proceeds to axe his 360.

I would be lying if I said I am not concerned.

This scares me. I don't have the most reliable internet connection, and if it drops for a few minutes they say it won't effect it? Maybe it will. Sometimes I may not have internet access for more than 5 minutes (I hate the mountains)

If this is confirmed, I am not sure what I will do...

Use the force?

I can understand in a way why they would want an always online feature but it is still a shitty move for the company when you consider how much that will effect the games

What iv heard/read, that the only real time you need to be connected to the internet is when you first put in a new game (basically to register it), but after that, then you can turn it off.

But then it comes down to you need internet to really function anything. So its like, if you have no internet, the Xbox wont be for you.

I love Halo... but with the things that could possibly be coming to the next xbox is steering me away from it. The Halo franchise is great, but not so amazing to me to be okay with being forced to only by new games and having my xbox "Allways Online".

Im giving Microsoft untill E3. If these rumors come true, then I will be going to the PS4. However, if the "no used games" and "allways online" are false and will not happen, then I'll stay with the xbox.

I will buy one console on its debut... What Microsoft does and says by/on E3, will decide where my money is going.

No use reacting until we get official word.
But after all the shitstorms that have come from things like this, I'm hoping microsoft isn't dumb enough to do it.
I'd find it easier to believe that they thought about it, saw the reaction, and said, "Oh, hell no. Back to the drawing board." and that's why its taken so long for any word on the new xbox to come out.

That's one of the reasons why im waiting untill E3... Chances are, the final product or final plans will be advertised by then. Iv been looking to upgrade, and it still seems like the PS4 or 720/Durango/NextBox are my options. Im already planning to build a Gaming PC, but that is going to be a side project and not a high priority.

I like what they plan to do with the PS4, and I was very impressed with it.

We still have plenty of time untill E3, and rumors will continue to spiral out of control and rumors will continue to be made... all we can do is wait :)

The always online thing isn't quite what it seems. They want to make the next xbox something you never turn off it will always be on in your house, and when you connect it online you dont have to be at your house to do stuff with it, its more of a "connected experience" with the rest of the windows 8 devices. I think (as there is no official word on it ) is something where you can play your xbox live arcade games and other content (music movies tv, ect) thats on your console through say your surface tablet at work. i think your xbox will become your "could storage device" that also plays games, Microsoft is now focusing on the "entertainment experience" as the gaming side kind of manages its self and console gaming is slowly dying in industry as less and less people want to make console games since the cost of making console games is going up, but the profits they receive are the same (per unit).

this is all based on what they have said about the new xbox (working with you other devices more) and how they have been promoting the xbox brand lately

PS4 is looking pretty good.

Now the PS4 on the other hand is trying to make the last system they ever have to make (since console generally dont make a profit unless they are incredibly expensive per unit as the development time and hardware is incredibly expensive).

The PS4 has the locking a game to a single console (sony actually owns the copyright to that technology and sells it to whoever wants it pretty cheaply) and your complaining about always online, well the step the PS4 is trying to make (in the future, not currently, it will start normal) it so that all game logic and processing is done on servers the game company host. that way when the tech requirements are 10X what the console can produce they can just upgrade some servers and it will play on the PS4... well that obviously requires internet connection and even worse it requires servers running at all times, a server goes down you can't play your game for potentially days even though you have done nothing wrong.

well thats just my mouth full, believe what you will.

I used to be suuuuuch a PS fan. Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter, and Ratchet & Clank are probably three of my top 5 video game series' ever. But Halo being my #1, the 360 controller feeling amazingly more comfortable to me, and (I think) a lower price point got me to switch.

Now hopefully I won't have to switch back.

I read it. It said they scrapped it because they didn't want to confuse the consumer, not because it was a dumb as fuck idea. They're probably going to introduce that to us slowly so we don't riot.

If they didn't make a video game console, do you think Halo would be made for the Playstation? That would be the only console with any real weight. I just thought of an interesting alternate reality...

To be honest, it's news/rumors like this that make me REALLY happy to be a PC gamer. I understand this is all rumor mill right now, which is why I am not going to overreact to this news, however, I do know this however. Should this come to light and be true, I'll be forever leaving the console world for my PC. Perhaps get a PS4 for some exclusives, but mostly my PC. I really hope this all rumor mill, or some bad marketing plan, and we have a logical gaming platform released.

People, seriously, look at how you're all reacting. The whole damn internet is reacting like this to these rumors. I'd bet money microsoft notices. If they were thinking of doing all of this, and that's a big if, they'd be sure to notice the reactions, realize that its a bad idea for business, and scrap it. I don't see where the fire is. Everyone needs to chill, look at this logically, and wait for official word before deciding anything.

I wholehearted agree with you. That's why I was stating perhaps its some kind of bad marketing plan. I'm pretty much neutral on this entire thing at this point. No matter how you look at it however, Microsoft does need to do some damage control on these rumors because of things like the entire gaming world rioting over these rumors.

It would be nice, but sadly microsoft has a policy of no comment for rumors of any kind. We'll just have to wait until they begin to speak about the next xbox.

That's why many people believe Microsoft pushed back their plans to reveal the console until May 21st (instead of later this month) because they are changing their plans for the Xbox.
