I know most of you probably don't care but rhythm games have been a HUGE part of my gaming over the last few years. So much so that I rarely play anything else. Over the years I've gotten to a point where my scores compete with some of the rhythm game giants. Example:

GHero has been my thing since i first played GH3. Now i just need a better Guitar. Problem is i need $$$. They cost a shit ton nowadays.

Personally, I'm a fan of Rocksmith . . .

I dislike both Rock Band and Guitar Hero because in general, if you get good at either before learning to play the guitar, it makes it harder for you because you aren't used to the precision required to actually play Guitar . . . while generally, being good at Guitar makes you good at RB or GH XD

Before playing Guitar I could barely play some songs on Normal difficulty, after playing for a few years I've done much better XD

In my opinion, if you have a real guitar, buy Rocksmith and learn to play, it's definitely worth it.

you're assuming Rock Band was only focused on an instructional guitar based experienced which is very very VERY far from the truth. It's called Rock BAND for a reason, it's not just guitar, but also vocals, drums and in Rock Band 3, keyboards. I got into drums because of Rock Band and the pro mode blurs the line between the real instrument and a game; the pro modes were originally designed for added difficulty, not instruction even though I know a lot of people who got instruction out of it. This is especially true for drums and keyboards. Harmonix has been more interested in entertainment than instruction from the very beginning.

if you're concerned only about the guitar part then let me ask if Rocksmith shows you the chord that you're playing on the side of the screen. short answer, it doesn't; long answer, it does in certain situations, but not all chords are shown, it just shows you where your fingers go; which is fine, but there is no discussion on why you're putting your hands in certain places on the fretboard, why the guitar is tuned a certain way, or, more importantly, core knowledge that makes writing your OWN music easier. you're not really learning guitar as much as you are just mimicking the motions. That's true for Rock Band 3 Pro Mode as well, but the charts also show the chords you're playing along with which frets to play, which is more important than just the frets.

I've obviously gotten something out of this game because I'm now considered a valued member of two bands in my area, one of which is a house band for a local restaurant.

and finally, being good at guitar does not make you good at the games. the best examples of this are Slash , Geddy Lee, and Alex Lifeson, all of which played Guitar Hero and Rock Band and could barely get through Medium.

EDIT: One other VERY important thing; neither Rocksmith nor Rock Band 3 ever focus highly on technique and correcting bad habits, which is detrimental to improving on the instrument.

I never tried to insult your playing haha I can't tell from your last post whether or not you were insulted by what I said, not what I intended. And what I was implying was, Rocksmith still helps you play the guitar better than five buttons on a normal Rock Band guitar (Which is all I'm talking about, not the keyboard or drums, etc). Even if you're just mimicking, you're training yourself (your muscle memory) on how to play certain shapes, as well as move across the fretboard effectively. I remember when I started, playing chords was the most difficult part for me, because I could never switch shapes quickly. I had to practice for hours a day and for quite a few days until I had it down (and I'm still learning). I didn't have Rocksmith for any of that, but practicing might have been more fun and easier with it.

Hell, for all I know you could be two times more efficient at playing guitar than I am (I know you said you played drums, wasn't sure if you played guitar as well), I wasn't insulting your skill in any way, but Rocksmith (I've never heard of Rockband Pro) is at least much more helpful in teaching someone new the guitar than GH or normal RB. I've only been playing two years, and I had lessons for a year and a half of that, I've recently added Rocksmith to my game collection, and I love the game. Yes, it isn't perfect, but it's a step in the right direction. If it makes someone interested enough to do their own research, than in they can pursue that on their own.

I was not insulted, I was trying to point to the ridiculousness of comparing legacy Rock Band instruments to Rocksmith, an apples and oranges comparison. It's much easier to compare the Pro Instruments to Rocksmith.
