How does one meditate? I've been interested in meditation for awhile, but the internet is curiously non-specific about how to reach a meditative state. I'm thinking it's a secret they don't want anyone to know. I've done the listening to your breath and clear your mind thing. It doesn't work.

Does anyone have any tips?

I usually sit in a room that is more isolated in the house. I have darkening blinds and curtains that doesn't allow the sun in it. I have candles lit up approx. 15 and I sit in a room for about 3-4 hours. I also make sure the room is sealed off completely because it takes me about and hour to pass enough gas to make me pass out and "meditate" for 3-4 hours

What is the purpose of the meditation? Spiritual? To sleep? To relax? Something else?

Relax, pass time, sleep if possible, to help me think and possibly gain insight or inspiration into what I'm thinking about. That sort of stuff.

Honestly...I'll just sit down in front of a blank wall and stare at it for several hours (record is 5 hours). I'll think about anything and everything. Then I kick myself in the ass for wasting 5 hours of nothingness

You have to keep going at it. Your not going to reach nirvana after one session of meditation. Try and make your meditation a common occurrence. By that I mean do it every day, at the same time. I've heard of people getting great results earlier in the morning, but it all comes down to your concentration and ability let go.
