Same thing happened with Halo becoming Halo: Combat Evolved.

Bioshock: Infinite had the same thing as well with its cover.

People that already knew about Destiny were already going to buy it. This new cover will drive sales in the "go to a store/online and go "hey, this cover looks cool/action-y"".

I now think that's it's their reveal of competitive multiplayer, not an announcement of the release date.
