The mysterious top character in the box art is not Cortana, as confirmed by the Xbox PR Director for Halo and Forza.

Sadly, I think it's Sarah Palmer, leader of the Spartan IV's aboard the UNSC Infinity. Looks like we might get a split-campaign a la Halo 2 with an uninteresting character shoehorned in (as opposed to the awesomeness that was The Arbiter).

Frank O'Connor has stated on Halo Waypoint that 343i got this announcement out of the way because there is "another shoe to drop...at E3 and beyond".

I completely forgot about it, but r/halo thinks it may be Naomi from the Karen Traviss books. AKA Naomi may be boots-on-the-ground on Sangheilios fighting in the Sangheili Civil War with/against The Arbiter.

I thought that as well, since the chest piece is rather feminine. I'd be really surprised if they made Palmer a leading part of the main story, since nobody seemed to like her in Halo 4. Though maybe she could be more likeable with better writing than there was in Spartan Ops.

Dat blue light tho. It's probably 343-Guilty Spark. Last I read, he was alive, his A.I. can jump from his light bulb to machinery, and (spoiler) he used to be a human. So, until otherwise informed, I'm going to believe it's Spark in a robot body who teams up with Chief to fuck up the Didact's day because (spoiler again) the Didact made him that way, I haven't read any of the books after Glasslands or the second Forerunner Saga which I forgot the name of, so I may not know what I'm talking about. That would give hope to the idea that Cortana could somehow get a body and live for millions of years without becoming rampant. That fucking lightbulb will not die. How many times did we kill that little bastard?

Very interesting speculation... The only thing shooting that idea down is they said this is a "new" character. Now this could very well be true in they can say its a new character but it's just spark in a "new" form. At first I thought it looked like a female character, but that was shot down. A part of me dreams that it is SPARTAN-B312... But I know it isn't. Can you imagine the only two hyper-lethal Spartans teaming up?? Helmet reminds me of my good old Scout helmet and armor. I will keep thinking...

This new info lends credence to the theory that a "new" Master Chief was created to find Halsey/fight in the Sangheili Civil War without remorse or whatever via cloning of John's DNA (which is incredibly dumb compared to the kickass Naomi plot-line from the novels).

Hopefully the theory I posted above is wrong, though. :/
