Pennies are made of Copper...Copper is becoming extremely scarce. It will save both countries millions of dollars if they stop making pennies (out of copper at least).

If governments would stop printing paper currency, it would save them millions. I wouldn't mind carrying around a $5 coin. DO IT GOVERNMENT!

Pennies haven't been made of copper in years Spartan, at least not in Canada. I'd hope the US isn't still using it >.<

Ichyban, this is old news brother. But I see you're from my neck of the woods in Beautiful BC, where abouts man?

Weight and size has little to do with the amount something is worth.
I say the biggest coin we have is the 50 Cent piece in america. Have that size, with different amounts ranging from $5-$100

America already has a $1 coin. Why not continue this trend?

Because it is widely disliked and unused. xD

Paper money is easier to manufacture, carry, and keep track of.

Personally I don't to see them discontinue the American penny. I don't think it'd effect our economy too much I think it'd just be an inconvenience.

Now if everyone was afraid we were making too many pennies and wasting our money - which we are - we could at least halt production for a year and then pick it up again the next year.

Better yet, America needs to kill penny production. It's not like pennies disintegrate like dollar bills.

It's supposed to take 6 months, to take them out of commission. That means Gas will never be under a dollar, unless it goes to 95cents (CDN), which I doubt. The new CDN bills are made out of plastic, making them cheaper, more durable, and ease to clean. Just make sure you don't forget a hundred in your pocket, they melt.

A melted $100... this would not be good

I was too lazy to read all the posts on pages 2-3 but the American Penny is made up of almost all Zinc, with a copper coating.

A cool little test to do is to take an old penny (like, old I don't remember the specific date) and melt them on a fire. The copper will completely bend and melt.

Now take a new penny and try to do the same thing. The coating will melt off but the Zinc underneath wont.

I'm pretty sure that's how that worked.

Actually I did this experiment in my chem class haha. I guarantee you the fumes aren't toxic. Still pretty sure that's how we did the experiment too.
