things i should be doing
1. looking for a job
2. getting my license
3. looking into a college

but no i'm sitting on my ass watching videos and playing video games

put simple i need to get my shit together, problem is where to start?

It all comes down to motivation. Motivation is key and if you have no motivation you're basically a rock. You just sit there and do nothing.

To put it in simpler terms think of this guy:
3647

....yeah you can get bored easily at 2am

Want advice? Just do it. Don't hesitate or even think if you mess up oh well that's how you learn.

Life is a lesson... We learn from it. Eventually it will build up to a point where a light will guide you to where you want to be.

I sit on my ass all day playing video games, going to school and working on weekends... anything can be done in little time... and anything can happen when you have all the time in the world.

You'll find things to do at a college ^.^

and yet the one thing that holds me back is fear. Fear is what controls my life.
ex: i don't go to college cause i fear i will fail no matter what and end up wasting money. I don't have a license cause i fear i will kill someone because of my stupidity. I don't have a job cause i fear that i'll just get fired anyways.

Fear rules over me, i've had this problem since high school, and i just can't shake it off.

If you successfully get you license, means somebody believe you can drive, so, so will other people. If you get a job you won't hold it forever either way. If you fail in college, the doors don't shut on you. You're young enjoy these things by just doing them you won't regret it no matter the outcome.

and yet i feel old. It's that odd transition into the real world where you think you're prepared for everything life throws at you. Not true. You are never prepared because everything changes. By the time i left high school, in my case at least, i practically learned nothing about the real world. It seems, again in my case, that college is what prepares you for the real world. But by the time you learned everything you're life 25-30.

Hey bud,

Just some friendly advice fear not what you mess up trying to do or fail at doing thats a part of life....You only learn that when things start getting taken away from you because you chose not to act. Never live life with regrets of what you could have done or could have said. If you fail at least you can say I tried my damnest at it and you MOVE ON....

trust me this is the least of your problems at your age and it won't get any better with that mentality. Change your perception and you will see how quick things change. Be the change you want to see in the world, Don't be afraid to act for fear of falling, it happens to us all.

You and I are so similar when it comes to this. Everything I do, and I mean EVERYTHING, I stop to think about how it will affect everything else. I also stop to think, what if I mess up. I used to be at point where I was fearful of doing things just outside my normal bounds because of that. This is where what Socialist said comes in.

It took me a while to realize this in my own personal life. Now in days, I accept failure. Failing is a part of life. However, our life is not based on our failures. It based on what we do with them. I've been shy to tell this story, but here goes.

Back in 2009-2010 academic year, I attended my first year of college. Things were great. Met a lot of awesome people. Learned a lot of new things. However, I was struggling. By the end of the 2nd semester my GPA dropped so low, I lost my financial aid and was removed from the college to poor academics. Yea, I got kicked out of college.

This was shattering to me. Not knowing what I was going to do, I continued to work at the same place I worked in between summers. Finally one day, I said screw it. I went ahead and started looking for other colleges. Somewhere to start all over again. However, this time I didn't have much support from my parents. Found a college, applied, got accepted, and off I went back to college.

While at college, I looked back at what I did to fail before. I know now what to do and not to do. I'm not perfect, but hey I'm living life.

Here I am now, one semester away from graduating with a 3.4 GPA. I'm a resident assistant with residents that want to be on my floor. I'm also the treasurer of our college's student government (aka managing a $567,000 budget). People come to me for help with just about everything. Honestly, it's the greatest feeling.

Best part? In my off time, all I do is game. :D

Moral of this story. Don't be afraid of failure. In fact embrace it. Raise your chin up and keep pressing forward. Break your bounds and try things you wouldn't expect to do. Have fun with life. Fail at something? Look at what you do and why that might have happened. Learn from it and press forward again.

Biggest mistake of life. Dwelling on the past and not looking forward into life. You'll miss out of on so many opportunities.

We all have to task risks at some point. I was kinda scared as well. But look at me now? Im now a radio DJ because of what i learned at college :)

Go to a community college. Figure what you want to do and take some cheap classes around that area. If you like it, go for a degree :)

Seriously this. A lot of people hate on community colleges, but seriously they help so much. Go to one and figure what you want to do. I thought I wanted to go into game design, now I know want to go into network administration thanks to my college.

My life plan/goals:

When I graduated High School in June of 2010, I knew that I wanted to take some time off such as year. I lasted 10 months before I got bored of playing video games and watching videos all day, and I hated the feeling of not having my own income.

I apply for a job at my local grocery store (Harris Teeter) and started working in the Meat Departament. After a week of training, I was doing well, but I hated it. The labor wasn't worth what I was getting paid and the smell of clams and oysters made me nauseous all day.

I transferred to the Starbucks within it and will be entering into my 2nd year and may actually be getting full-time. I am determined and hard worker so I'm hoping that I will get it.

All of this is working towards buying a car and then soon after that, college where I want to study to become a chef.

Essentially the moral of all this, is don't worry about the fear of your consequences or what you do. If you feel that you are doing the right thing, then why stop?

The way I look it, is if someone has to make a change in their life (no matter how big or small), they should do it right then, rather than waiting for a special moment (like new years resolutions).

Just balance out your priorities like I did.

Step 1: Job
Step 2: Money
Step 3: Car
Step 4: License
Step 5: College

After I get to college, I'll figure what the rest after that.

EDIT:

Oh, one of my biggest fears is being in debt. But recently I realized that no matter how smart or how well you manage your money. At one point in your life, you will be in debt, it is inevitable. I started to accept that debt is just another natural way of life.

Oh Shuckle,

I wish you were closer brother, I'd sit you down over a beer and give you my story and help you with yours.

Your life is a book, it has ups and downs, but in the end, you have to take charge and write your own ending.

Pretty much everything in this thread is wonderful advice. My two cents on top: It doesn't matter whether or not you like it, or want to do it, you just have to do it.

I have a similar problem to you, I should be working on getting a job, and getting my license, and my grades are horrid, but I basically just got sucker punched and realized what I'm doing. Just do it, don't think about what might go wrong, or what you might otherwise be doing, just think of what might happen if you don't do what needs to be done.

PS, if I sounded like an *ss, sorry
