Don't see why you think it's a bad idea. Variety is good, as long as they execute it well.

MC or bust
343 seems fine as far as campaign goes. I trust them in that department.
Multiplayer, however, is where my fears are.
This sucks then
Locke seems fine as a playable character, but putting a brand new character never before seen into a series, and then instantly putting them as the primary... That doesn't really flow that well with me. Not opposed to it, but would definitely prefer MC.
Just thought of something! There is a very small chance that they do something similar to ODST. Imagine Locke as the Rookie, and MC as everyone else...
If they do it this way, I won't be very happy with 343. The Arbiter I believe became very favorable within the time of Halo 3 where he was the secondary character to the game.
I also think that the main reason that people are mad over the switch, is that we all were told that we would continue the story of Master Chief. Again, I guess that if you think about it they never did tell us if we would continue that story as Chief or as another. So I guess we will have to wait and see.
Honestly, I don't see why people are so up in arms over this. Playing as a different character adds a new perspective to the franchise. In ODST we saw the horrors of the Human-Covenant war first hand as a front line soldier. It doesn't hold quite the same weight when playing as MC as a protagonist, but imagine him as the enemy. This Agent Locke could be very good if done correctly. If done well, we will see Chief in a new light and experience what it's like to try to hunt him down. If done wrong than 343i needs help.
