This looks gayyy...
@Silko, I instantly thought Jesus Lightsaber when I saw it.
I hope that was sarcasm. Because that lightsaber was terribly designed.
The point of blade guards such as that are to protect the user. But seeing as the blade has an emitter sticking out, unless the hilt is made from materials that are lightsaber resistant (such things exist in the EU) it will be cut off when a lightsaber blade is forced downward toward the hilt. Also unlike real swords, lightsabers do not have a dull part and a sharp part. All parts of the blade are lethal. Meaning if we are going to see lightsaber fights like we saw in eps 1-3 with crazy acrobatics and saber twirling such as this:
This new Sith is going to be running though hands faster then the men in the Skywalker family.
This shall lead to an escalation in Lightsaber technology: https://i.imgur.com/hllhJpP.gifv

Stephen Colbert rocks it on the Lightsaber Controversy.

Colbert is correct to a point. While the blade does start inside the hilt, the emitters all have focusing lenses to keep the saber blade in the shape of a blade. Without those emitters the saber blade would be unstable. So while Colbert is right that if a enemy's saber blade were to make contact with the emitter of a side blade it would just cut into another saber blade, the loss of the emitter's focusing lens would make that side blade useless.
