    Re: KONY 2012

We talked about this in my U.S. History class today. This girl, (a stupid rich girl) was adamant about advertising it to the class.
She convinced our teacher to watch it. While this was happening, all the other (stupid, rich girls) we're "aaawwh"-ing and gasping at the terrors of Kony.
This video just makes Social Activism look cool to the youth, but in reality, 32% of the "non-for-profit" donations actually go to Africa.

I did a little research, and Kony isn't even that active anymore. He's done (unsuccessful) peace talks, and the LRA isn't even as large as it's made out to be.
He's no longer in Uganda, and the Ugandan government is possibly as corrupt as him... but that's where the money is going. It's providing arms and training to the Ugandan government.

Our teacher pointed out- that even if Kony we're to be assassinated, that another war lord would rise in place of him, because the education and "proxy-war" ideology that goes into Africa is probably past the point of being fixed. If you teach them how to fight, well, when they kill their leader, the new leader will only know how to fight.

When the girls learned this, they were extremely distraught. It kind of annoyed me that they would blindly throw their support to this because they wanted to be cool and someone told them to. When she originally brought it up, she couldn't even explain what it was about. She had to have us watch the video (and she claimed she had seen it 3x already) They seemed to be realizing that the world wasn't a perfect place, where justice was always served. It kind of annoyed me. We're such a counter-productive society.

Even my "friend" (He's really just a narcissistic douche) said he immediately bought the kit, and a shirt, after watching the video. He's not as dumb as the other girls, normally he's fairly intelligent, but he blindly put his money in. When someone tried to tell him this, he just said "Don't you try and make an argument for Joseph Kony."

Don't get me wrong, he's still a very evil man. He uses children to protect himself and for his own benefit.
But the campaign is being run by a corporation that is taking money from the kids, for their own benefit.

I really don't think that is the cause Dalton, and I don't think the money is actually going towards the government. It's going towards the children, even if the man isn't active anymore he deserves to pay for what he's done. (I'm not really sure if thats what you're getting at here.)

I say keep fighting, because honestly if this prevails I'm going to have to put hope back into this country again. Something I lost a very long time ago and never thought it would even begin to return.

Did you even watch the video? You need to do research before taking sides.

Well, honestly, I would through blind support to this cause. Not by buying the kit and such, but simply by spreading it. Kony is an evil man, and deserves to be brought down. Even if he isn't "as active" anymore. Just saying.

I agree with that, but is he worth the national attention that will give less than half of the donations to the cause?

How about we go about a productive cause, and educate the African people? Instead of giving them something to shoot with?
(That's what we're doing. Training murdering rapists to kill a murdering rapist.)

Kony isn't even an atom to Hitler or Stalin. If you watch the video, they show clips of the Holocaust to hype Kony.
He's a bad guy. But public enemy #1?

    Re: KONY 2012

You know what deserves attention... the fact that children in our country are starving because their parents are crack addicts and are trading their food stamps for drugs, or that our fucking schools are spending more money on apple products then teacher salaries. Sure that's pretty sad and all but when there's issues going on in my own back yard i'm pretty sure that it should be priority over something in another country.... sorry if i seem fucked up.

    and then there's this...

The video itself is a good piece of emotional porn but that's about it. It's honestly NOT worth the 30 minutes when you find out somethings about the organization that is doing this [Invisible Children].

First of all, the guy who made that film get's paid $90,000 a year. That's for him and his family. This does not include him paying costs for film equipment, video editting software, nor does it cover travel or accomodations whilst in anywhere else. Those are all covered under the ludicrous budgets that the Invisible Children organization actually deal with. Let's go to that now. Here are some expenses from CharityNavigator.[ http://www.charitynavigator.org/inde...ry&orgid=12429 ]:

Compensation of Leaders | % of Compensation relative to amount of money made by IC | Title
    ■$88,241 | 0.99% | Ben Keesey - CEO
    ■$89,669 | 1.00% | Jason Russell - Co-Founder/Filmmaker
    ■$84,377 | 0.94% | Laren Poole - Co-Founder/Filmmaker

    Revenue
    ■Total Contributions: $10,334,060
    ■Program Service Revenue: $3,423,351
    ■Total Primary Revenue: $13,757,411
    ■Other Revenue $7,769
    ■TOTAL REVENUE: $13,765,180

    Expenses
    ■Program Expenses: $7,163,384
    ■Administrative Expenses: $1,444,570
    ■Fundraising Expenses: $286,678
    ■TOTAL FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES: $8,894,632

Payments to Affiliates $0 Excess (Or deficit) for the year: $4,870,548

    Net Assets $6,584,811

As if that isn't bad enough, they've refused to Co-operate with the Better Business Bureau, Their transparancy rating is fairly low on Charity Navigator, and allegations of fraud. HuffingtonPost has an article on it here.

Besides, they make a fairly large point about sending money to the Ugandan Military. This is a big no no for a couple of reasons. First of all, Kony isn't even in Uganda. Funding a military that has no real authority over another country to LOOK in other countries, is a moronic idea to begin with. Secondly, the Ugandan military is already using this as an excuse to enter other countries and exploit resources from surrouding areas. The Government of Uganda is full of criminals that are worse than Kony himself. Not to mention the bloody PRESIDENT of Uganda is responsible for millions of deaths. Then you've got allegations coming out that Kony is already dead. The LRA (Konys ragtag bunch of assholes) isn't that large, or all that active.

The worst thing about Invisible Children (In my opinion) is that they lobbies for DIRECT MILITARY INTERVENTION IN AFRICA. After all of the terrorist hunts in the Middle East, and having troops stuck in Afghanistan and Iraq, don't you think that the people would have learned by now that having troops in another country to hunt one asshole isn't exactly the best idea? Especially when some of the Republicans believe that invading Iran is a fairly good idea at the moment. There are SERIOUS issues with this group, issues that people are overlooking. I will admit that at first I was already on Twitter and ready to bitch at people about the injustice that's being served in other countries and then I decided to look into the organization. The information is there, and willing, but people are fearful to even look. Fearful, lazy, or just swept up by the movement. Injustice exists in the world. It is damn stupid, and it sucks ass, but that's the nature of this planet at the moment. Humanity, since rising from the primordial ooze, has killed people over far less than anything you could imagine. Then there's the fact that if Kony is alive, and the ICC, or International Criminals Court, manages to put him on trial, what's it going to achieve? Numerous war criminals have stood trial before the ICC. This isn't a game of chess. You don't topple a pawn and move on. The pawns replicate. It's like fighting a hydra. If you slice off one head, more are going to pop up in it's place. You remove one player, and 10 others will appear. Hell, there's a case to be made that awareness driven ngos perpetuate the current state of afafairs and are an intergral part of the current system of global unfairness. They ovver placebos for guilty consciences and as such, they don't change anything. If you think of large entites such as Global Corporations, conglomorates and powerful nation states that capitalize on injustice, corruption and disorganization and exploit the poor for their resources and manpower, the best thing that could happen to them are programs such as this. There's a lot of reasons why Invisible Children has a good idea of what they're doing, but FAR too much on the opposite sides of the scales to tip myself (and no doubt others) into not bothering with this group and it's practices.

Im gonna say this, cuz im tired of saing it over and over again to everyone that talks about this.

Why are you suddenly starting to care? this has been going on for over 15+ years and now people are starting to care? The damage is done. People have already been effected. Why are you starting to care now... why not years ago. Iv known about this since atleast 6th grade (im in college now).

@Bazonga, people are starting to care now because there is a driving force of people behind it. Back when a small amount of people knew about it, it was much harder to spread the knowledge. But now, of the course of 8 years or so, the number of people behind the movement, however corrupt or seemingly worthless it is to some people, has grown immensely. Personally, my family has known about it for more than a couple years now.

@timm3h, I don't believe we've met before. Hello, I'm Baconn. Anyways, I don't think you could find one person in this community who doesn't agree with you. Somehow, America always wants to deal with other countries' problems, but hardly ever solving our own. Poverty and the drug abuse by the people who live in it is a huge problem.

Now onto the Apple products over teacher salaries. Here in Louisiana, next school year the teacher's salaries will become directly related to how their students do on standardized tests. (Which, I am against, because I don't believe they are an accurate representation of one's knowledge. I believe Mythonian agrees with that as well, but that's a topic for another time.) I'm a Sophomore right now in high school, and I know that paying teachers based on student scores is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. There are students that go to school just to squeak by and get their GED, andthen there are students who ultimately don't give a damn. And also, our computers are 8 years old :P.

TL;DR timm3h is right, America should solve our own problems first, Louisiana School Board and Government is stupid.
