is there anyway of making it so that only one team gets a bye instead of 7 teams? if its too late thats cool though

Brackets of this type (single elimination) must be 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. participants.

Since we had 9, a 16 player bracket was needed, which is why 7 teams got a bye.

If the tournament had been a different format (i.e., had pool-play or round-robin finals for example), than it could have been set up differently.
